If anyone has been following--- My restoration is complete (1967
starcraft 14' fiberglass/1958 Johnson 35hsp) Thanks to all who sent
input- it was all taken in and used on the project. The motor got
quite a bit of help from a local guy--as I would have been way over my
head making some of the repairs. If anyone has any kind of problems
with older Johnsons/evinrudes, this guy is an ace.
So far we haven't had a day on the water without a problem-1st the
motor conks out in the middle of the lake, after a tow in a mangy mutt
jumps up on the sparkling paint job attempting to scratch the daylights
out of the bow. The boat somehow escaped major injury. 2nd day---
after motor repairs and re-tune, we have a nice time on the water, then
about two hours later, somehting ignites the boat back by the motor and
we have a small fire. Nothing a couple of coats of paint won't fix
right up. This fire took place in the street in front of my house.
3rd try--- we take the in-laws out for a little ride and we get
completely soaked in a downpour that seemed to come out of nowhere.
With all of us in and getting wet and heavier the thing wouldn't even
plane out so all of us got just a little wetter. I'm looking forward
to some better times on the water.( It can't get any worse! )
With all of the talk about naming boats, I'm thinking of naming it the
love bug, after the movie. If memory serves I think Herbie was
destined for the junk yard several times only to be saved some how or
another.
Thanks again for all the help and I'll let you know if things improve
or not.
