| subject: | dumb question re box cloning |
Hello janel! 03 May 03 09:05, you wrote to Ellen K: >> OK, hardware-challenged Ellen here: >> >> I want them to give me a better box here. I've been doing it with ThinkPads for years. Um er.. Not necessarily. If she is talking installed programs and settings.. (??????) Norton Ghost, Drive Image, or PC Relocator Can be used to clone the original system drive onto the new system drive which she says is also larger in capacity. She will then have to do a repair/reinstall of Win2k over that setup as to accomodate the newer hardware (CPU/Mainboard and such) as the registry would be expecting the old hardware, then she simply re-applies all the service packs and hot/quick fixes. When she finishes this up, everything, her installed programs and settings will remain intact. She may have to do some tweaking of her programs if they were accessing a particular piece of hardware, like for example a FAX program that was using the modem on COM1, but the modem is now on COM2, that sort of thing. == Ross Official Fidonet Region 18 Home Page: http://www.region18.info BBS: http://www.the-estar.com:8080 - telnet://the-estar.com ross{at}easternstar.info | ICQ: 5305939 | Blog: http://www.iblog.us ...
