I've heard of that kind of soil with the rock, hard to imagine
having that to grow something in,, but guess it's not all bad if
the earthworms live there.  I know about forests instead of yard.
Planted a bunch of citrus trees in my back yard, didn't seem like
much when they were little, but boy when they grow big!  
Wish I could grow apples too, miss those.
