I have a boom box at work that's also trouble,  the thing works fine except
for the cd player,  which doesn't work for the most part.

That seems like a pretty valid concern to me.

In the case of the boom box at work,  I don't have to take anything apart, 
it's right there on top.  With regard to the other device I mention above, 
it's still fairly new,  probably still under warranty,  and I don't think I
want to take it apart just yet if there are other solutions available to
me.  I made the mistake of trying to play a music cd in it that I'd gotten
from the library,  and that's when it started giving me trouble...
