Hmmm, flame throwers or even flaming arrows would be more 
efficient...

A good 10#'r broad side would work!  (Used to have a game called 
_Broadsides_, of square rigger-type boats.  Lots of fun, if you 
knew when to lose the "weak" boat's mast in exchange for 2 off 
of the more powerfull ones.)
