 SVI> Hello All,
SVI> First of all, the New Stuff. I got 5 new CD's, most of them rather
 SVI> disappointing. Here goes:
 SVI> - King Crimson: _THRAK_ (1995): Gosh. Now there's a side of ProgRock I
SVI> didn't know. I wish it had stayed that way. Booklet: don't like the
SVI> cover. Do like the (strange) tracklist, the (weird) lyrics and the
SVI> (crazy) way they are printed. Let's have a listen, then. Hmm,
SVI> interesting. This could evolve into something really good... Nope, not
SVI> that way. Maybe it's just a bad song. Let's wait. Nope. Nope. Nope...
SVI> _I'm a dinosaur_, the best track on the disc, is what I would consider
SVI> the worst track a good band can make, without making a laugh of
SVI> themselves. Conclusion: I really don't know what you guys see in KC. I
SVI> mean, to me it sounds like Kurt Cobain trying to imitate Freddy
SVI> Mercury (oops). Perhaps the early King Crimson was better? Like, good?
 SVI> Sorry.
Well, I like _THRAK_ well enough, but I can't honestly blaming you for
not liking it. _THRAK_ isn't all that much like their earlier stuff,
though. Try _Red_ for a good example of their 70's period and
_Discipline_ for the 80's.

SVI> Next (yes, this is getting a long message, I know): _Ozric Tentacles_
SVI> in concert. I would really like to go (because they are reported to
SVI> 'sound like Marillion'), but I don't know anything about their music.
SVI> They're not in the library, so I'll have to buy one. Suggestions? Also
SVI> _Gong_ in concert (next day, same place). I don't know anything about
SVI> Gong. Are they ProgRock? How do they sound? Should I go?
Hmm, I can't really imagine who told you that Ozric Tentacles sound
like Marillion. OT is all instrumental, for one thing (well,
occasional weird vocals, but...) Their albums are pretty much
interchangable, so pick up which ever one is handy. They're kind of
psychadelic with some blazing guitar and lots of wierd synth stuff.
Speaking of OT and Gong, a lot of people say OT is greatly influenced
by them, specifically the album _You_. That's the only Gong album I
have, and it's pretty good. Starts rather oddly, so listen to the
whole thing before commenting...
