OK, thanks for the info.  I just called MS for the new intellipoint
software for the ver 2.0 mouse (same but without the wheel) and
installed it yesterday.  Boy, what a joy!  They were so polite on the
phone and sent it free of charge.  All I had to do was give them the FCC
ID number on the bottom of the mouse and voila, free upgrade (even the
shipping was free.)
Now since I know that the wheel works with wp8, I might take the plunge
and get the new MS mouse.
