That's not right.  The 8D designation refers to the dimensions of the
battery,  plain and simple.  Yeah,  you can get similar capacity in a
smaller box,  but are you looking at cranking amps,  or reserve power?  The
tradeoff there is the thickness of the plates,  thinner plates (and more of
them) gives higher cranking amps,  lower reserve power.

But anyway,  something smaller might have been okay to do the job,  it just
wasn't an 8D...      :-)

And I have adapters here that will give you "marine" terminals by
putting them over regular posts,  as well.  Plus some that will give posts
on a side-terminal battery,  or vice versa,  if you only have the wrong
type on hand.
