Joseph Smith was translating writing that had already been done. The
missing pages were eliminated when Joseph was disobedient.

Smith lost his ability to translate until he repented. By then, those pages
had been read by many people and had been modified by some in an effort to
discredit Smith and the Book of Mormon.
