Automotive propane tanks are designed for 250psi minimum.  Many design 
for 312psi, dry air tests to 468psi. Pressure release valve from 250
to 312 psi.  Working pressures 150-190psi.
Just another viable option. Check wreckers, I find old tanks here regularily.
(Our taxi fleet is propane, as are cop cars and a host of other commerical
vehicles.)
Couldn't tell you the pressures on a bbq tank however. But they are filled
at the auto propane pump...but maybe with a lower pressure pump...
