subject: Re: dumb question re box cloning

From: "Glenn Meadows"

I'm going to be doing the same thing here shortly. Only difference
(maybe), is that I'm going to build the box instead of buying a pre-built
(Dell, etc.). Two of our label VP's have some of the worst/old machines in
the company. They have LOT's of stuff installed, and are running Win2K
(limpingly).

My hardware upgrade path will be to build a new machine, sans OS, buy 2 new
copies of Win2kPro for them. With the drives still bare, I will GHOST the
existing HD's to the new ones, and on first boot with the Ghosted new HD in
the new machine, to a "refresh/upgrade" type of install, where
Win2K will install into the same directory as it was on the old machine,
letting it detect the new hardware on the new MB, and then install the
appropriate drivers from the CD that comes with the MB.

That way, the old system is still intact in case there are problems. Once
everything is up and working, the old systems can be "cleansed"
of the other apps that moved to the new machine, and be used for interns
that work through here on 90 day periods as Internet Marketing machines.
(Part of many of the interns jobs is to visit the various chat rooms and
start a buzz, or talk up some of our new releases. )

That's how I would do it. (And am going to do it).
