because you can kill two birds with one stone if you want to know what the
value is in addition to the success/failure status... remember that on some
systems, any negative number is a failure while any positive number is a
success... some systems use zero for success and any other number for false...
it depends on the coder and how OCD they are as to what they return for
whatever reasons... who are we to question them? ;)
