The teachers of my entire district have been asked by the association to
work to contract next year.
They staged a sick out for one day the last week of school & about 200
(out of 500) teachers called in sick.  The school board refused any
raises & only grudgingly after much protest, gave us a step.
Unfortunately, for 179 teachers, that meant no increase whatsoever
because they are at the top of their column in the salary scale.
The board tried to pit the newer teachers against the older teachers by
asking us to vote on the measure (of getting a step increase or a 1%
salary raise.)  The newer teachers stood to gain as much as $1,500 while
the ones with more seniority got zip.  The district office
administration keeps admonishing us to "put children first."  I find
that really ironic, since I'd like more money to be able to have a child
sometime & be able to provide well for him or her.
BTW, we aren't striking because AZ is a "right-to-work" state &
striking is illegal.
The whole thing is pretty sucky in my opinion.
