You have that right, a digital SLR where the film is replaced by a CCD.
Many folks feel like you do about wanting to stick with the traditional
use. Comparing the two most popular from the Nikon line up, the d70 is
a fine SLR with a larger CCD but few pixels, that produces excellent
pictures. A very fine camera and priced in line with the Coolpix line.
Often referred to as Point and Shoots by the folks who want to hang on
to the past with the SLR. The 8xxx series of the Coolpix line have
larger pixel count but smaller CCD's proving the old adage that pixel
count isn't everything.
What they do sport is a menu visible from within the viewfinder, where
the dSLR menu is on an LCD at the camera back. That makes it possible
to change menu options without looking for a place to hide the back of
the camera on a sunny day. The LCD's on the P&S will swing out and
around nicely allowing you to shoot at waist or ground level, or over
your head without mirrors or other accessories from a fixed point of
view camera. The SLR will use your existing lens, the CP lens is
fixed. If you have an investment in fine glass, then the dSLR is the
only way to go.
The images produced from the larger sized but smaller pixel count d70
is in my opinion a better looking from more processing, image than
produced by the CP line. The CP images though can stand greater blow
ups if you want to later crop an image tightly.
It's a very personal choice. Look at everything if your thinking of
making the jump.
