subject: cheap birds

-> As for "cheap birds", I can attest to what I said with a story.
-> There is a woman local to me who gets all her birds at garage sales,
-> etc. Anybody who is getting rid of a bird for whatever reason, she
-> takes'em all. She won't buy directly from breeders--they cost too
-> much there. She has over 100 birds, mostly tiels, and I don't think
-> she paid over $10 for the most expensive one of the lot. Her babies
I know of several people like this...Actually, I tend to think
that their initial motivation for acquiring these birds in the first
place became misdirected...Initially, they may have felt they were doing
everyone a favor for taking and/or saving birds that no one else wanted.
It was their way of being a do gooder and at the same time acquiring
birds at little to no cost. They soon learned that this is not
necessarily a cheap hobby and it was at this time their motivation began
to change. They saw an opportunity to breed and sell, not knowing or
really caring about what was involved. For the most part, they do
community breeding and if I had to guess, would imagine that the great
majority of people who fall into this category have their birds house in
deplorable conditions. If we as a society continue to provide these
types with a means of creating a demand, they will continue to exist as
does all the other negative situations in our respective communities.
As a society, we create the demand, they just fill it...
