Hello Everybody (who hasn't yet died or gone off to the Teachers' Summer
Stomping Grounds!)
I just finished my first week of teaching adult classes how to use
Windows 95 & GroupWise 5.
Wow, what a difference. I could concentrate the whole time on actually
teaching rather than worrying about what that student had under the
table or that another one was poking someone else with a pencil. No one
threw staples or spitwads, nobody mouthed off to me (significantly, I
should qualify that one!) & not one soul insisted on a pass to the
restroom. I could get used to this.
That was the behavior aspect. As far as the equipment goes, I didn't
have to make sure that the mice remained uncastrated or that pencils
were being pushed into floppy bay doors. (I did have to stop one poor
soul from trying to shove a 3 1/2" floppy into the 5 1/4" drive door.
She kept insisting, "It won't fit, mine won't fit [cram, cram.]"
One guy dragged his "world" icon in GroupWise into the Trash & made
GroupWise not function until the system was shutdown & rebooted.
Nothing major, tho'. Since it was his first time on a computer this
week & everyone else had at least been using Windows 3.x, I thought he
did very well, other than that & I guess Trashing one's World could
happen to anyone on a computer. ;^)
I was just as tired on Friday night as I am during the regular
schoolyear, but it was a less of a frazzled & scrambled brain type tired
than an I-worked-extremely-hard type tired.
I only had one major class rebellion, when they decided that they didn't
like the concept of Document Management & how it will change their
procedures for storing files. They were blaming me (as the messenger of
the news exactly in the same way the kids do about admin policies.) I
figured out very quickly how to nip that idea in subsequent classes.
I was happy that after 10 years of teaching, my husband had his first
opportunity to watch me teach (he wasn't in my classes, he set up &
maintained my computer lab.) It very flattering to find out that, after
attending one of my classes, the company's president told my husband
(who is one of the Network Admins) that I am a very good teacher.
This week, I teach 2 more classes, then will be available for support
to the employees & next week, I start teaching in Vegas for the
following 4 weeks.
So I guess there is life outside elementary school.
