subject: Cluster algorithm

Hi Mike,

You asked:

MR>This is the algorithm I'm using to determine a drive's cluster size based on
MR>its size:

MR>Rough cluster size is drive size divided by 65536
MR>Convert rough cluster size to binary
MR>Count number of digits in binary number (starting with first '1')
MR>Actual cluster size is 2 raised to the power of the number of digits above

MR>Is there anything wrong with this *other* than it not taking into account th
MR>12-bit FAT of a <16MB drive?

Yes. The minimum cluster size on 16-bit FAT is 4 sectors (2048 bytes)
(another Microsoft odditity :-( ).

MR>I shrunk it down from 100MB with PartitionMagic (1.0), but I also reformatte
MR>the drive.

In the PartitionMagic (2.0) manual there is a table of cluster sizes
(Figure 4.1).

MR>Is the cluster size still being affected by what PartitionMagic did, or is m
MR>algorithm (and hence my understanding of FAT) flawed?

Your algorithm...

George
