I do this all the time with dissimilar hardware. Rarely do I have a problem
that requires a complete reinstall. There are usually some things that need
to be installed on the new box, typically video, NIC, and audio drivers,
but the programs are intact.

I use Drive Copy, copy the old drive to the new drive, boot the new drive
it and see what happens. If there are any weird drivers or hardware,
sometimes I remove them if there is a problem. Keep the old drive handy for
a few days in case something crops up and you need it.
