Hi Dan!

DT> KAREN LONG spoke of My daughter to DAN TRIPLETT on 05-21-97

KL> DT> I am not sure of what advice to give you regarding your
KL> DT> daughter. I have copied the letter and plan to show it to our
KL> DT> school reading specialist. Perhaps she has some direction for
 KL> DT> you.

 KL>Thanks Dan!!! I keep pluggin' away...but I'm afraid it's going to
KL>take someone a little more skilled and educated than I to truly be
KL>able to help her in the fashion that she needs it!

DT> Yes....and now that school is out I may not get the information I
 DT> wanted....

Firstly, I'm surprised I received your reply...we unexpectantly lost our
feed, and I of course lost all replies to any posts I made several
weeks ago! I'm EXTREMELY glad I received this from you! Since writing
the above, you wouldn't believe what has been going on! First...I
realized that I am smart enough to help my daughter, and have been doing
just that since about 2 weeks before school let out!

Here is a rundown of what her and I do nearly everyday:

Read a book, or read a complete story from her SunShine Reading Book
10 sentences OR 10 spelling words, her choice
Do one to three pages from her Grade 2-3 Spelling book, she's already
completed her Grade 1-2 Spelling book we purchased for her
1 to 3 pages in her Comprehension Workbook we purchased
1 to 3 pages of Math in any of her 3 Math workbooks we bought her
OR she can do addition/subtraction flash cards
We learn how to spell four new words and their meanings, her choice of
  what those words are
We play a Money Game or a Time Game, her choice
We also have USA bingo, and Let's Go Shopping, her choice if she wants to
  play them or not
We have a magnet board with numbers and the basic mathematical signs, it
also has the strips of 10's, the squares equal to one, and the large
squares equal to 100, it has strips to teach fractions, and it also
has red circles for playing number bingo
We work on Phonics, sounding words out, and meanings of words
We purchased a set called Kidderoos, which is a large black cloth that comes
with all sorts of shapes, numbers, letters, and items such as a building,
house, dog, cat, girl, boy, bus, ice cream truck, hot air balloon, tree,
apple tree, fire hydrant, car, sail boat, yacht, etc. These all have
velcro pieces on the backs of them. She likes to do her spelling words
on here, or create pictures or stories. It's very educational for her
as well as creative. She has a lot of fun with this! It also came with
6 additional velcro pieces to attach the cloth to a piece of wood, peg
board, or even a wall! We attached it to a piece of wood measured and
cut to the size of the cloth so that we can do this outside as well!
We bought a bag of plastic coins and she LOVES to play store...where she
has in her possession money cards with the amount of money in big
numbers on the one side. She comes to my "store" and chooses which
things from the Kidderoo collection she would like to purchase. I then
put the "coins" in a box, and she must decide what she wants to buy,
and then take her money card, and count out the right amount of money!
My 10 year old son has a BLAST playing this with us! The other day we
were playing this, and Ryan was purchasing the building, house, sail
boat, airplane, and the yacht...Chelsea was waiting and waiting, and
she finally says to me..."I'm leaving this store, you're too slow!"
as she throws her money back in the box! She said "I'm going shopping
somewhere else!" We all just sat on the floor laughing! They had SO
  much fun that day!
She has a Manuscript Handwriting "PlaceMat" that she traces over with
water color markers...she likes doing that too, and it gives her good
practice on the correct directions for making her letters, and it helps
her control her letters as well. You wouldn't believe how screwed up
this little girl is on making letters...it just makes me wonder what in
the sam hell her teacher did all year other than criticize!
We have dry markers and write on/wipe off sheets...when we do our new
words for the day, we also draw pictures of our new word...she loves
doing this too...especially if I let her drawing be much better than
mine...it makes her feel so good, and it seems to build up her self-
  confidence a lot!
We bought this book for her called "Our Bodies", and it's designed for
children her age...it tells how our bodies work, and the differences
between boys and girls! Both my kids think I'm real cheesy for buying
it and reading it to them...but they still laugh and have fun with it!
We also checked out a couple of science project books for young students,
and have several of them typed up to do with them this summer...we just
have to get all the suppies together to do them now!
We bought them a Deluxe Speak and Spell...it has 20 different spelling games
on it...my 10 year old plays it sometimes...he's terrible in spelling,
and since it has 3 levels of difficulty, it's equally as good for him!
We have sight words and phonics flash cards too!

Along with the above, this mom is really big on praise and rewards! I've
got a very large supply of stickers, and some are for when she works
especially hard, even if she misses all the stuff on the page, I give her
a special sticker because she tried so hard. She's only done terrible on
one page and that was my fault...I didn't explain to her well enough what
