For now, our thoughts are primarily in one direction, but the answer is
"anywhere they send me." -- I'm a long in the tooth Army aviator in the
reserves. Currently serving in a Joint Service unit at Scott AFB.
I know you were retired before I got in. ...... It was about 32 years ago
today I tried to enlist in the Navy. I couldn't find the recruiting station
and after a while I went into an Army recruiting station to ask directions to
the Navy recruiting station. As they say, "the rest is history."
My whole "career" has been a series of such events. By the strangest of luck
I got to sit and talk with a helicopter pilot the night before I took my
flight school written test. Surprisingly (and incorrectly, in my opinion)
the Army based part of its test on prior knowledge of how a helicopter
operates. Thanks to an evening of tutoring from the pilot I scored very well
on my flight school test. In fact, I did so well on how to fly helicopters
that they sent me to airplane flight school. (Figure that one out.)
I did two tours as a recon pilot in I Corp and then took off the uniform.
Later joined the Reserves and went to helicopter transition. Later went to
the Safety Officer Course and served as a safety officer for seven years. For
the last five I've been flying a desk. In another 32 months I'll hit my
mandatory removal date. Maybe I'll be ready to hang it up then, but for now
I'm happy to be able to keep on serving.
                                                 Best regards, .. Bob
