PacifiCare Driver Junqueira Started On Pole But Finished Second With a
Conservative Pit Strategy in The Toyota Grand Prix Of Long Beach;
McDonald's Driver Bourdais Finished Third After Starting Second
PacifiCare driver Bruno Junqueira, 27, started on pole in the Toyota Grand
Prix of Long Beach but was passed by third place starter Paul Tracy on the
first racing lap and never regained the position after a conservative pit
strategy in the 81-lap Champ Car World Series season- opener. The first lap
of the race began under caution as the starter felt Junqueira held too much
of a gap on second place Sebastien Bourdais. Once the race started third
place starter Paul Tracy made a pass on the inside of both Bourdais and
Junqueira and took the lead of the race on the first racing lap (lap 2).
Junqueira held second place approx. 1-2 seconds behind Tracy until he was
the first driver to make his first mandatory green flag pit stop on Lap 25
- compared to Tracy who first pitted on Lap 30.
