An oddity yes, but they normally leave them here in Japan or replace them
with fresh warm ones at certain times of the meal.

Enjoy!  I'm not that big of a sushi fan.  It's ok stuff, but I only go out
of my way to get it in Okinawa at a particular place.  Dai Itchi Okinawa
hotel place has really good sushi.
