JB> Cindy Sheehan Quits as 'Face' of Anti-War Movement
JB> Tuesday, May 29, 2007

JB> Cindy Sheehan, the "peace mom" who made headlines in 2005 by
JB> staging a marathon protest outside President Bush's Crawford,
JB> Texas, ranch, said Monday that she no longer wants to be seen as
JB> a leader of the anti-war movement.

She believed something was wrong, and she protested it (her right as an
American - one of the freedoms we're supposed to be fighting for.)

JB> In a 1,245-word missive entitled "Goodbye Attention Whore" posted

I hope she can.

JB> Sheehan founded the Gold Star Families for Peace after her son,
JB> Casey Sheehan, a 24-year-old Army specialist, was killed in an
JB> April 2004 battle in Baghdad. Sheehan was an outspoken critic of
JB> the Bush administration's policies and was often a target of
JB> criticism herself for visiting with leftist leaders like Fidel
JB> Castro and Hugo Chavez.

JB> Sheehan, however, said she had become increasingly disillusioned
JB> with the Democratic Party. In an open letter to the Democratic
JB> members of Congress on Saturday, however, she announced that she
JB> was leaving the Party because she believed its leaders had failed
JB> to change the country's course in Iraq.

She's right on that. The change in control of the Senate and House
happened because Democrats were elected to get our troops out of Iraq, and
they backed down to Bush WRT timetables for ending the war. Whatever one's
opinion on the wisdom of timetables, they didn't stand up to Bush because
there weren't enough votes to override a veto, and they were afraid they'd
be accused of not supporting the troops. The Republicans, since this war
began, have done an excellent job of painting anyone who disagrees with
Bush and Company as traitors at worst and nonsupporters of the troops at
best.

JB> "I was the darling of the so-called left as long as I limited my
JB> protests to George Bush and the Republican Party. Of course, I
JB> was slandered and libeled by the right as a 'tool' of the
JB> Democratic Party." Sheehan wrote. "However, when I started to
JB> hold the Democratic Party to the same standards that I held the
JB> Republican Party, support for my cause started to erode and the
JB> 'left' started labeling me with the same slurs that the right used."

Because the Dems know they didn't show any backbone, and are trying to
deflect attention away from that. She deserved much better from them.

Perhaps now she'll at least get what she wanted, a meeting with Bush? *adh*
