Hello Michael. I first began BBSing as a regular user on my Macintosh LC III
back in 1993. That dear machine had a whopping 160 MB hard drive, a 13"
monitor capable of a full 256 colors, and initially, as I recall, 8 MB of RAM
which I eventually upgraded to the full 32 MB of RAM. My very first modem was
an Apple 300 - 1200 baud modem. Eventually, I moved up in the world and got a
2400 baud modem at a MUGG -- Macintosh Users Group of Guam -- Christmas party.
Boy, was I flying then! The 2400 baud modem was eventually replaced by a 14.40
modem, and then US Robotics had us flying with a 56K modem. That was followed
by DLS, and then cable modem. Our current connection is 7 megabits down, and
1 megabit up, which translates into 875k maximum downstream, and 120k maximum
upstream...although I have NEVER seen that downstream.

It was that same year -- 1993 -- or possibly 1994, that the Armageddon BBS
was set up, and became a part of a local BBS network. It wasn't until 1997, I
believe, that we joined FidoNet.

But, eventually, the Internet overshadowed us, and I took down the Armageddon
BBS. I had a few false starts after that, but it's been up on a semi-regular
basis since September of 2008.

At this current time, the Armageddon BBS is one of the very few remaining
Macintosh-based BBSes that is accessible via telnet. I don't offer dial-up
anymore.

While BBS technology may seem archaic to many people who belong to the new
generation of computer users, BBSing, just like Usenet newsgroups, still
have their charm and appeal. For example, the graphic overhead, as well as
threat from viruses and trojans is considerably minimized.

I continue to be a part of both worlds -- the old and the new. :)
