I still prefer heat. I sit the coffee pot on the diskette for about 45
seconds to let the heat soak through, then rub my hands over the paper
label to cool the label slightly. Haven't had any problems, although I
have run across a very few labels that were simply unremoveable.
The point of cooling the label after heating is so that the plastic
diskette is warmer than the paper. If the paper is warmer than the
plastic, the glue will tend to separate from the paper and leave you with a
real sticky messy diskette.
As far as solvents, stay away from acetone (nail polish remover), as that
will remove the oxide from the disk inside the case. Lacquer thinner will
dissolve the case, so that's not too desirable either. The petroleum based
solvents, mineral spirits, lighter fluid, kerosene (lamp oil) etc., do a
fair job of softening the adhesive, but you can again be left with a
'sticky diskette'.
Good luck... M.
