Well, you see, we differ in two respects, which illustrate how class
differences can change people's perspectives:
(1) You made $30k less after your hospital job. Which means that after your
hospital job, you were at _least_ making around $45k. I have never had a job
that pays more than $17k ever. And so our financial positions were different
from the get-go. You also had credit cards to fall back on, I have relatively
poor credit and cannot get a credit card.
(2) Your statement that we should just get up and move is a lot different
when
you are renting instead of living in a house. I'm trapped in a lease of one
year, which is the standard length of a lease around these parts.
Also, keep in mind that we are living in an information economy. Perhaps you
have had the fortune of holding down a few good IT positions, and so you are
way more marketable than most people. I personally have the knowhow, but lack
much workplace experience.
I'm not whining or making excuses, but illustrating how things are different
for different people. A lot of people do rent, haven't made more than $15k or
so, have no savings, have no credit, whatever. A lot more people are
disadvantaged because of the way they look, or they are black, or just have
no
skills and are trapped in minimum wage-paying jobs. It isn't a big problem
for
me because I have a job right now, so it isn't too urgent. I guess 60 resumes
isn't that much - but according to all the papers around here, Columbus is
the
"Silicon Valley of the Midwest" ... where's all those computer tech shortages
we hear so much about?
