subject: Barcode reader

Hi All , hope you are having a nice day

 I've got a barcode scanner that I picked up sometime
back and what w/ trying to move in the future it would
be nice to have it working so I could slap some labels
on the boxes w/ the inventory on the laptop. (i also have
a nice thermal label printer made for ups labels if i can
get a 16vac 4amp wallwart and maybe a driver for '98 to
go w/ it. eltron lp2442psa, rev. g)

 Anyhow the scanner uses an HP wand w/ a db9f connector,
and the scanner unit itself is not a lot bigger than a
db25 shell. It has a db9m on one end for the pen, a tiny
barrel connector (1.3mm i think) and a db25f on the other
for hooking up to the computer. It has 2 leds on top for pwr
and when it gets a good scan, plus a hole for the beeper.

 Here's a bad ascii drawing of it...

*
*              --------------------------+
*            /                           |___
*(on/off) =/  * (on)                     |   | db25f
*        /  * (scan good)                |   |
*      -+                                |   |
*  +--|                                  |   |
*  |  |                                  |   |
*  |  |                                  |   |
*  +--|                                  |   |
*db9 ^ -+                                |   |
*        \    O (beeper)                 |   |
*(+5 in)  o\                             |---+
*            \___________________________+
*
*

 The pwr is marked as ON INDIC, and scan is GOOD READ w/ both
marks to the left of the leds. (told you it was bad ascii )
Same thing w/ the beeper. The db9 is marked INPUT and the
db25 as COMMUNICATION INTERFACES (yep there's an `s' on the end)
and the logo is a slanted BB w/ the back of the `b' made up w/
vertical stripes. Sorta like this, but the right half is solid.

*       /// / ////////////
*       // / //         //
*      // / //////////////
*     // / /////////////
*    // / //          ///
*   // / ///////////////
* /// / //////////////

 Underneath the logo it's marked COMPACT w/ the registered (R)

 On the back is a sticker w/ a layout of

    COMPACT (large letters)
 NUMERO DE SERIE (small letters)

       4701

 CONFIGURATION (small letters)
   CC4.00.BB (large letters)

 MADE IN FRANCE (small letters)

 I've had it open and there's a MAX232 chip so I know it's a
serial interface, but there's a jumper for something in there
and I haven't the slightest idea if it's wired as DTE or DCE
nor what the proper comm settings are for it. I've tried using
my comm program and some other stuff to try and talk to it
but I've not had any luck so far.

 It *does* seem to work though as I've tried scanning a number
of different code types from the usual UPC found on abt everything
you buy, to the ones on some medication bottles and even a few more
propritary kinds and it claims to get a good scan from them.

 -=> Yours sincerely, Paul Williams <=-
