subject: EMEA DAP woes

Sunday January 21 1996, Mario Semo writes to Jonathan de Boyne Pollard:

 MS> To: JORDAND --CROVM3   D Jordan

 MS> At a general Question and Answer session, the subject of support
 MS> came up. I described our IBM Solution Developer HomePage
 MS> and how our strategy was to move in this direction over time
 MS> for information, as well as accepting questions and answers.

 MS> Three European gentlemen approached me after the session
 MS> and were quit adamant that the Internet solution did not
 MS> have any E-Mail features.

 MS> PROBLEM:
 MS> =======

 MS> In July 1995, the OS/2 DAP in EMEA transitioned support from a BBS
 MS> to the Internet. The BBS had several news groups and forums on
 MS> it that could be accessed with E-Mail. With the Internet services
 MS> there is a need for:

 ---->> Alternative to TCP/IP
 ---->> Mailing use - each SD stated that they downloaded

 MS> ACTION NEEDED:
 MS> =============
 MS> Would you please:

 MS> - research the DAP, BBS closing
 MS> - find out if there is another alternative to E-Mail information

 MS> I understand that you met with Dell Rieth at ColoradOS/2. He says that you
 MS> have problems using the service that we now provide through the Internet
 MS> and e-mail. This is how he summarised your ( and two others) problems :

 MS> In July 1995, the OS/2 DAP in EMEA transitioned support from a BBS
 MS> to the Internet. The BBS had several news groups and forums on
 MS> it that could be accessed with E-Mail. With the Internet services
 MS> there is a need for:

 ---->> Alternative to TCP/IP
 ---->> Mailing use - each SD stated that they downloaded

 MS> However last 4 month people like we cannot use new service and have
 MS> been deprived of previous BBS service. Would be nice to find some
 MS> acceptable way to solve this problem, because DAP (or SDP) is really
 MS> a vital part of OS/2 chance to survive. I am very serious about that.

 MS> Best wishes,                                   Harry Bush

The tragedy of all this is that there are some people within IBM who
actually understand FidoNet technolgy and AFAIK there is even something
called DEVNET which has been set up. I find the Internet service a waste of
time and never bother browsing the WWW site although I used to call the BBS
nearly every day.

Why can't the DAP administrators extend DEVNET to all DAP members?

I have Internet access and run my NNTP program every day but I am still
reluctant to run it unattended, although I have been running my FidoNet
node for five years without thinking twice about doing unattended polls.
I'm sure there is a lot of useful news on the DAP but I have to make the
effort to pick it up. If it came via FTN, I would always get it.
