it depends, gifs are limited to 256 colours, whereas jpegs can be 24

bit, so the colour resolution of the jpeg is usually better, the spacial

resolution depends on the compression ratio used, but, as a general

rule, i'd say that you can at least half the file size without any

objectionable effects. it does depend on the individual image though,

some take jpeg compression better than others. don't try it on line

drawings or things like corel draw pictures though, jpeg is specially

designed for photographs.
