subject: Visual basic vs. Delphi

Hi Ron,
On Wednesday, 2 July 1997 at 16:18:33, Ron Tuynman confused me
talking about: Visual basic vs. Delphi to Rob Williams
RT> But that's not the issue, I think. The original
RT> question was about learning Delphi. For me it's not that
RT> easy. Maybe I'm stupid, but I hate programming in Delphi.
RT> For instance: In Clipper a FOR-loop is always
RT> terminated with a NEXT. A DO WHILE... with an ENDDO, an
RT> IF-statement is always terminated with an ENDIF... It's so
RT> delightfully clear! Not for Delphi: all is ended with the
 RT> same END;
Ermmm, isn't that easier????!!
Instead of having to know what to put afterwards, you just always put an end.
Anyway with familiarity, you get to know the syntax of the basic loops and
stuff.
RT> Furthermore I hate it to program on those
 RT> 'Post-It-notes'. I want a FULL and clear programmingwindow!
RT> Now I always have to enlarge it...
Have you tried running 640x480? OK useless for programming but some people
might. This is more a problem with the way it works i.e. the fact there are
multiple windows. It's a small problem really isn't it?
Once you save a project it retains the window sizes anyway.
RW>> What helped me the most in learning it is to look at
RW>> the samples (there are lots of them),
RT> ...I looked at it, but for someone without a Pascal
RT> background it's rather hard to understand the why's and
 RT> where's...
Well Pascal is a very structured language. If you've learnt another one
(e.g. C/C++) then it's quite easy to switch.
RW>> Agreed....Have you looked/purchased any of the good
RW>> database Delphi books to learn from?
RT> ..Yep! I've got three books overhere, but still I'm in
RT> need of a grouped list of all functions and their syntaxes.
RT> The help-files aren't giving me exactly what I need.
Surely they *DO* give that?
Bookmark the "Procedures and Functions (categorical)" page in the helpfile.
What more do you want??
bfn,
si.
