  Make has only two problems. Firstly, the syntax relies on whitespace,
  and secondly there's no uniform syntax and semantics (of interence
  rules, environment variable handling, and special macros) across
  different toolsets.

  Set up the macros for your compiler (CC, LD, LINK, or whatever) in the
  "default" makefile for your make program.

    For NMAKE (as used by IBM and MetaWare), this is TOOLS.INI, and the
    documentation is in the Toolkit.

    For Borland MAKE this is BUILTINS.MAK, and the documentation is in the
    Borland C++ Online Help.

    For Watcom WMAKE, this is MAKEINIT, and the documentation is in
    Watcom's C/C++ Tools Guide.

  Some make programs come with many such macros predefined. Borland's
  MAKE, for example, comes shipped with a BUILTINS.MAK that predefines the
  CC, AS, and RC macros, and predefines most of the inference rules that
  you will need in common useage.
