I'm confused as to your standpoint here, but I think i get the gist. I've
tried Quake and it really wasn't a big deal, just another las-minute attempt
to boost ID's sales over the New Big-Sellers, Apogee, after Duek got out and
they saw what the Build 1070 (I think..correct me if another ver.) could be
manipulated into doing, and they had barely scratched the surface of its
potential and spent like a couple days fiddling with video support and
therefore ended up with a perpetually dim, linear game that reminded me of a
HUGE deathmatch mode, without knowing the others on-line, because of the
inavailability of any extra props or actors in the game. As to your quote
here, I know the feeling. Try playing (I shouldn' say it, but) Witchaven. The
only ranged weapon is a bow with puny little arrows and some magic fireballs,
and those are WAYY later in the game, thus you spend maybe 2 levels
ttempting
to fight a lynch mob of projectile-tossing baddies, who inevitably gang up on
you, often (believe it) a phalanx formation. It's impossible without cheat
codes. You have a couple swords, an ax, a spear or something, that damned
ow,
a paring knife, your gloved fist, and some throwing hatchets. You can't hit
enemies unless you're right there, and there's no fun left in the game.
However, with Duke's awesome array of ranged weaponry, a slew of enemies can
be met from afar, and still some up-close. The range certainly makes the
difference.
