Okay, everyone listen up. I went to the library downtown today and decided
that I would pop in to Judge Winslow's office to chat! And chat we did. He
was actually okay to deal with but we found differences every inch of the
way. As most of you know, he is for closed records and closed adoptions.
However, his criteria for opening records is as follows: Medical; most be
documented life or death matter accompanied by a letter from physician which
he will personally call and validate. Native American; he suggested that
adoptees contact the tribal councils and that adoptees have the council
petition Winslow. He says he always releases info to the tribes. I
explained the catch 22 this presents but he wouldn't budge. Unfortunately,
he said that the tribes don't know the right procedures for requesting this
information. He suggested we ensure they know the procedures. I'll be
willing to visit these people personally if someone else will find who I am
supposed to see and where they are. Also, supply me with a phone number so
that I can call them.
Secondly, the Adoption Law Reform Committee will be having public hearings in
OKC and Tulsa in September. Anyone that would like to speak please contact
either here or at 102353.1006@compuserve.com or 918-745-1876. Also, we need
big numbers for turning out. WE need bodies to show up and fill up space.
This is your chance to make a difference.
Thirdly, FYI - Deaconess Home of Oklahoma and the Latter Day Saints of
Oklahoma are listed as paying contributors of the paid lobbyist group that
attacks the states that are reforming adoption laws. There are only 28 groups
that are represented by NCFA. Please be aware of whom you are speaking with
when chatting about the committee and the hearings, etc. I have been working
with one of the agencies in town regarding opening their records through a
local reunion registry - they are not interested unless we can get some other
agencies on board. I am looking into a proposal for the committee to take a
look out - all input welcome.
Last, I will be in and out of town until school starts, my dad has cancer and
I am going back and forth to Houston between his treatments. However, please
feel free to call and leave a message on my voice mail as I will be checking
in. You can also beep me at 918-672-3592. Homephone is 918-745-1876. Also
have some information on Judge Hubbard and exactly what criteria she is using
to release information. Found out why Vital Stats is not releaseing
ifnormation even with court orders. If you need help, call.
