Because this isn't even "morally debatable"; the only moral
position is to return Elian to his father, and every passing minute was
going to only make it harder. On some moral issues I can grant that there
might be moral validity to the other POV; for example I am pro-choice but I
understand where the other side is coming from. But in this case, I
ascribe no moral underpinning to a view which holds that the politics of
the government in which a child might be raised should usurp the
parent-child relationship.
Your statement about Elian not being in imminent danger, etc. etc. ignores
a basic fact: Elian's father has had legal custody of Elian from the moment
the mother died. You are using a "possession" argument which is
entirely invalid. Elian should have been sent back to Cuba immediately.
We had no right to make the father come here.
