I'd always been using the first patch, and a couple of days ago I just 
installed the latest patch, and I've still been having problems, although
not nearly as many.  

The main problem left is that the FILESIZE function was causing some
runtime errors on untyped files of record size 1.  I've fixed it by writing
my own FSIZE function to replace the one in VP's system unit and everything
seems to be a-ok at the moment.  It's a relief that my program is actually
fully functional now without bombing out with RT errors.  

VP is great, I've taken a look at Speed-Pascal, and didn't like it too 
much.  I'm sure I'll probably purchase the commercial version sometime
in the future.
