Hello Mark -

TW>>>> It also prevents you from downloading the music file
TW>>>> itslef by right clicking on the mouse and saving it. All
TW>>>> you get is the redirect file.

->>> and once you have that, you can look inside it (with
->>> list.com for instance) and go get the actual file...

As I've mentioned before, the use of the 'redirect' is
necessary to alert the browser to load the player and 'stream'.
There is no other way (that I know of) to get the music to play
as it is transferred.

TW>> Intersting. I will have to ask Charles about that. I
TW>> wouldn't think that you would be be able to download it .
TW>> Wouyldn't it just stream to you like it did when you
TW>> clicked on the button on the web page??

ml> i guess that depends on what you use to go get it with...
ml> and if you stop and think about it, streaming is really
ml> nothing more than playing it while it downloads to your
ml> box... the ability to save it once it all arrives is
ml> another matter altogether...

I've not actually looked into my 'Temporary Internet' folder to
see if _all_ players save the music file to the drive or not?
It is conceiveable that some players do not save the data but
only buffer it in memory. I don't really know the answer to
that but I have grabbed MP3s from the temp directory after
streaming them from other websites and XMPlay when set to
'repeat' does not do a second download from the website (which
is nice).

I'm thinking right now that answer could vary with the player
involved?

You are correct that once you read the redirect you have the
URL to directly download the file. Some websites, such as
MP3.COM seem to use CGI that makes downloading the file a bit
more complex but in most cases doable. My cgi only counts the
redirects and is not in the redirect URL itself.
