There is. The problem is that not all HTML is authored to provide
fidelity when such an action is taken. While my messages should all be
pretty simple, I know I get HTML email from businesses sending me
statements or newsletters that are formatted with multiple columns. I'd
never expect that to look good. This and other reasons are why I dislike
read as text as a solution for any problem I've heard of.

Could some smartness be built in to strip the text out of an HTML email
message, that, at least would let me know what the email is about without
actually having to look at the source or turning on html viewing...

The read as text should use the text body of the message if one was
provided. My posts, for example, include both a text and HTML body. Some
messages could have HTML only as this is legal. In this case the text
message must be derived from the HTML. How well that works depends on the
HTML and how tricky it is.

No, I don't prefer HTML, I use the Read as text, but the implementation
is
faulty, some emails don't display at all, so you have to turn that
feature
off, so you are then vulnerable to web bugs and other HTML nasties.

OE is just showing the plain text portion of HTML emails when, in fact,
it
should be stripping out the text from the html portion if no text
portion
exists. Also link get royally screwed up...

    IE crashed once again...

The released OE has the "read as text" feature which I
hate. Are you
saying that you prefer HTML email?

wow, have they added a webbug filter to outlook yet? (I'm not sure that
it
matters to me anymore as I stopped upgrading when they added the
  activation
requirement but I'm still curious as to whether or not it's been
  addressed).

       George, this should interest you.

The most recent release of Hotmail blocks images, both external and
  MHTML
packaged, in messages by default. If any are blocked there is a link to
click on to view the message with the images. Users can configure their
account to disable this if they wish.

The press release on this and other spam issues is at
