 I appreciate your input but you may be getting hung up on the legal aspects
 of a minor plot element. One last time:
 The wife ran off with the kid and some time later he got a divorce in the 
 mail from some obscure Carribean country.  There were no lawyers, no custody 
 battles and when she returns just face to face "free enterprise"  
 agreements as God and Rush Limbaugh intended. 
 This novel is populated by drug dealers, sex deviates, and murderers but
 I draw the line at lawyers.
..There is a proposal to use the surplus of lawyers for scientific research
in place of rats.  There are some things that rats will not do.
