This is a short write-up of an idea that I have used for a number of
years on my own cordage. Several recent requests from friends for a
summary of it encouraged me to write this. It then seemed like a
good idea to pass it on in several of the Fidonet Echoes. Hope that
the subject fits them.

Stabilizing cordage ends with SuperGlue
Tired of all the fraying ends of cordage from shoelaces to 1/2
in. or even larger lines of cotton, nylon, polyolefin or
polyester, 3 strand rope laid or braided? Use SuperGlue!
Starting at the end of the cord, soak with standard SuperGlue a
length of undisturbed cord, approx. 2 to 3 times the cord diameter.
Allow to set for several hours. Cut off the frayed end with a
sharp knife (or fine hack saw if the diameter is over about 1/4 in).
Smooth the rough edge with a file, if needed. When cutting a length
from a longer piece of cordage, soak a length approx. 4 to 6
diameters long and cut in the middle of the hardened section. Puts
a rock hard end on the cordage that will take almost any abuse!
The initial treatment of 1/4 in. or larger 3 strand cordage
should be finished with a single coating of high viscosity
Superglue, especially in the valleys between strands, to bind the
strands together better.
