For all of those using the small, mini dual band HT's and getting wiped with
intermod when downtown in your favourite big-city Rf environment,a little tip
that works jsut fine for me.
If your HT is capable of turning off one of the bands and going into MONO
band mode try it.
With all current technology going to surface-mount parts and packing them
into ever smaller cases, intermod can and is a major problem.
I have had over the years a Yaesu FT-470,Alinco DJ-580,Kenwood TH-78 and now
run a Kenwood TH-79A dual band handheld.
The way I found,by accident,to get rid of nearly all of my intermod when in
a downtown core was to turn the opposite band off from the one I was
operating on.
The Yaesu FT-470 regularly would be wiped out on the 2m side if the 440 side
of the radio was in recieve mode only. Turn of the 440 side and the intermod
dropped by up to 80 percent.
The Alinco DJ-580 (early model) was fine for intermod mainly, except when too
close nearby pager site transmitter. Going into mono-band mode dropped the
intermod right out of the Alinco completely in most cases.
The TH-78 had minor problems when in the area of a pager site, and sometimes
when too close to a cell site, but once again the `go to mono-band' trick
works.
The TH-79A has so far proved to be the best of the 3 for intermod and even
with a pager site less than two blocks away it only had occasional burps of
intermod. As in the Yaesu and Alinco once the radio was set to mono-band mode
the intermod dropped away completely.
Give it a try and see what happens.
