Why not combine the two!  I did a large, fancy initial with some flowers
and then instead of framing it made a quilt border around it.  The
border was made with half triangle squares and the four corners were
four triangle squares.  I had seen this idea in a magazine with a poem
about quilting and a few little x-stitched blocks and really liked it.
Just have your borders ready and cut the aida cloth to fit or
vice-veras.
