DM> The USR line test told me that my phone line would support x2. This

DM> to the Internet at 46-48K all the time. Probably my local POTS line is
DM> the limiting factor; I could never get 28K connections with the 28.8

I don't know about that, Dave. Seems to me, you are connecting at the
highest possible rating for the 56K by your getting connected at 46-48K.
As with the 28K, most will connect no higher than 26.4. Or those with a
33.6, connect at about 31.4
MS> Therefore, I would have to say that the outlook for x2 isn't that
MS> lucrative? And, if it is, you can expect some performance
MS> difficulties?
DM> My guess would be that it is already quite lucrative for USRobotics.
You certainly got that right! ;)
MS> Possibly in time, just like many of the other technological
MS> advancements we've witnessed in our time, x2 will be just another walk
MS> in the park.
DM> You are undoubtedly right, Michael, so why not enjoy the stroll while
DM> it while it lasts? :)
Oh, I will! It disappoints me though, that the 28.8 USR WinModem I have,
(which has been upgraded to the 33.6K), won't go to the 56K as I was
mistakenly led to believe it could. It's funny how this modem can be
backward compatible all the way down to 150 - 300bps, but can't be upwardly
compatible to the 56K. :'(
Although, I understand that if the technology went to 128K, I'd be asking
for too much for a unit that cost less than $50.! ;)
DM> Now just to be sure we are on-topic, I think x2/56K is the way for
DM> most of us to go if we are in the market for a new modem because it
DM> seems to me that the price has been dropping steadily since it's
DM> introduction.
True, I'm thinking of upgrading my daughters 14.4 to this 33.6, and install
the 56K in this unit.
Sincerely,
Michael Sharon
