-=> Quoting Ellen K to Frank Haber <=- EK> Urk. If that's the case then the only thing I'd get with 98SE would EK> be the ability to run newer versions of stuff that don't run on 95 any EK> more (like the Norton security stuff). It's more than that. Multi-monitor support, Windows Driver Model compatibility, a better DUN (ver 1.3 tweaked more), Internet Connection Sharing, erm... Win95 to Win98 or re-Installing the Same Version If you don't want to lose your existing set-up but need to do a re- install of the same version, say to clear some operating problem that can't be fixed by any other method, then key F8 on boot-up or hold the left key down whilst booting, select 5. DOS prompt only, go to your windows parent directory, and rename WIN.COM to something else. Now re-install from your CD ROM drive letter at the DOS prompt. Key at a DOS prompt: CD \WINDOWS REN WIN.COM WIN.BAK :SETUP /ND The command switch /ND (No Disturb) re-installs Windows but only repairs system files or does your upgrade. You won't lose your current set-up but if you're re-installing the same version, this method may restore any settings you had screwed up and can't seem to undo. You will be prompted if there are any newer files already on your system than on your CD ROM. The /ND switch bypasses MIGRATION.DLL settings and forces Win98 to overwrite newer files though. So do use with caution if you've already updated with service packs for instance. Files that use .INF file ",,,32" flag force Win98 Setup to keep newer versions. Win95 or Win98 to Win98SE The win.com-to-win.bak trick doesn't work completely for upgrading from Win95 or Win98 to Win98SE, as you will be asked whether Win98SE should be installed in a fresh folder \WINDOWS.000. Change this to your default \WINDOWS directory and most should be well, retaining existing Win98 desktop settings. It's been reported that the above win.com-to-win.bak trick only works for Win98SE OEM versions, not the full retail version. EK> Anything resembling power management is already disabled. EK> How do you shut down to the "orange-on-black idiot screen only"? By disabling APM and ACPI support in your BIOS, and your OS, and after completing installation, disabling PnP support in your BIOS and/or setting Reset Configuration Data to No EK> Maybe the original hard drive is starting to go bad... ? Backup quick. And then do a Scandisk. See the arguements for an unattended Scandisk (I don't know what size yours is) Richard ... W [0M 䏀.
