Dallas & Nora & I went to see PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
recently.  The critics didn't like it... but we did!  Johnny Depp, as the
fictional antihero, lives by his wits & keeps reappearing when he's
been left for dead.  I imagine that's the sort of thing many people would
associate with the word "survivor". IMHO there is more to it,
however, as a number of one-liners in the movie also suggest.  Early in the
story JD is ridiculed by more conventional thinkers for carrying a compass
which doesn't point north.  Some time later, the purpose of the instrument
becomes clear to the audience.  And he remarks drily that while his compass
doesn't point north, he doesn't intend to go north anyway....  :-)
