I think something is wrong on this end, will have to talk to the sysop about
the connection. I did reply--but apparently it got lost also.
I think you can start teaching about LANs by playing the game we call
"Whispers", aka "Chinese Whispers", "Gossip", and "Secrets". Have the
students get in circle and you whisper in one students ear--something
short--that person has to whisper to the next person, etc.. That will
demonstrate a ring network, as in Token ring. You can also demonstrate other
types of networks in a similar fashion. I am not sure exactly what you want
them to learn or how much to learn. Some students that I had two years ago
learned too much for their high school lab instructor to cope with--they
cracked his password and brought the network down. You can install a network
E-Mail system or setup your own intranet by putting a BBS system online.
Students can leave E-mail and engage in live chat, etc..

Unless the class you are teaching is specifically designed for teaching the
network operating system, I would be wary about going farther, although some
will be interested. You might also get some surplus or obsolete equipment to
show them what hardware is needed to make up a network.

What more do you want?
