| subject: | W9x/WMe DOS-6 boot style |
Hi Jim,
About "Win98 multi-boot?" of May 25:
JH> Does anyone know if Win98 will support multi-boot configurations...
I used a modified set of `MSDOS.SYS', `Config.SYS' & `AutoExec.BAT'
multi-configuration files for some time now and i testify that it works.
My "DOS" option from my boot menu has memory management done by the
latest `HiMem.SYS' driver (`Win 98 SE'/`MS-DOS v7.10a') and `EMM386.EXE'
(`Win Me'/`MS-DOS v8.0') drivers; i even had `DOSMax v2.1' on top of it
for my `Win 95' partitions. I don't see much difference once dangerous/
incompatible SoftWare has been identified and removed but one item which
i'll confess really took me off my guard was the fact the extended ~FAT~
DOS support doesn't include an "UnDelete" function!... Norton `UnErase'
or any similar tool is a must: imagine you realize you deleted a system
file by accident, a fraction of second too late!!! Anyway, i also began
testing the same trick on `Win Me'/`MS-DOS v8.0' and there were problems
about loading `EMM386.EXE' at 1st but i eventually obtained a full 64 Mb
of memory (the maximum under all DOSes, i guess) - this is only possible
once the patch from `MFDDMe13.ZIP' has been aplied, of course. Finally,
i haven't got the opportunity to test any ~USB~ device under DOS but i'm
aware that there are a few DOS ~USB~ drivers around, which means i might
not have to sacrifice much should i need ~USB~ support. As for the rest
i rarely load `Windows' to use my InterNet DialUp access at all and it's
most probable the situation will be the same if i switch to cable-MoDem.
Relatively to ~LAN~s, i'm afraid i'm not there yet but since `ILnk'
and `ISvr' from `MS-DOS v6.x' are limited to ~FAT-16~ partitions i began
to use `IPXCopy v2.7' for the large transfers (it supports ~LFN~s). ;-)
When asked what limitations there are under `MS-DOS v7.10a/8.0' the
reply will be very few as far as i'm concerned - i only see benefits but
that's me. :) I publish my configuration files from time to time and i
have two sets of copies left on my ~WEB~ site you could look at... It's
the `EPPPD' link starting from my hope page, in case you need any of it.
Salutations, :)
