G'day Bob, Saturday September 21 1996 07:23, Bob Lawrence wrote to All: BL> And the crazy part is that these wankers are asking (and BL> presumably getting) up to $1,000 for a 486 with 4Mb and 250Mb hard BL> drive, when you can buy a NEW 586 with a 8Mb and a gigabyte for BL> the same! And a 2-year warranty. I managed to fall into a deal and last Monday picked up my new toy. A "used" $2000 laptop for $500US. It's a 486/40 with 4mb and 250mb hard drive and colour display. It started out with the basic Windows VGA display but after visiting the Website for Compaq, I ended up with SVGA drivers and an SVGA display. The guy that had it was a real wanker and only used the thing to play Solitaire with... he had got it in a divorce settlement and "just needed the cash". He had a good week to change his mind but luckily he didn't. I don't think this has been used for much more than maybe 10 hours prior to my getting it. The keys still have that "new" feeling. OH, and better yet, it actually has a 16550 UART, external comms/serial/parallel/video/docking bay ports, and a type III PCMIA slot, and is upgradeable. The only thing I don't have is the warranty since I'm not the original owner. Finally a PC that can keep up with my Commodore for telecomms. My C128 has had a plug in UART cartridge for 3 years now. One of the magazines I write for sent me a 20mhz accelerator for the C64 recently for review too... Geez, so many new toys, so little time... :-) Cheers, Gaelyne ...
