When I installed a FireWire card into an XP machine it installed some extra
network component (I've forgotten the name) which seemed to sit above the
FireWire and existing Ethernet connections. Subsequently most times on boot
the machine wouldn't see the DHCP server with consequent total loss of
connectivity. Disabling TCP from the FireWire has stabilised things. I
haven't explored further. The FireWire was for a DV connection and doesn't
seem to mind not having TCP...
This was on a Dell with a default XP Home install.
