Reminds me of some of the fun I had when I had a broker who knew the ins
and outs of the phone company. I ran a WorldClass system at work that
developers used for groupware with a team out in Zone 2 land (in telco
parlance, a toll-plus call. Not long distance, but not free. They ended up
being huge money makers for the telcos.)
I'd set it to call when they had outbound mail, approximating crashmail.
Instead, they set it to call every 10 minutes, regardless of whether or not
they had mail. If I recall, the remote site on the far end didn't want to
pay for the call, so the guys on our end set our system to poll them, to
the tune of $300/month.
My broker suggested that I get call forward busy service added to the line,
call forward my line to the far end, then call myself. Call forwarding was
$4.95/month, plus message units, something like a penny a call. Worked out
to be a huge money saver.
