Greetings from Pensey's Point, Carey!
Carey Bloodworth put fingers to keyboard and spelled out some words about
DRDOS6.0 to Sam Ewalt on 17-Jun-96.
CB> SE>Interesting comments regarding Geoworks and DR-DOS.
CB> SE>We all know that if you try really hard it is still
CB> SE>possible to buy Geoworks Ensemble. But what about
CB> SE>DR-DOS? Is it still available?
CB> If you need a copy of DR-DOS6.0, I've got one I'll sell you. Includes
CB> compression, defragger, etc. Everything MS-DOS 6.x had, except it was
CB> years sooner!
CB> Personally, I don't like the DIR command. It's like the old DOS DIR,
CB> where as MS-DOS 6.x has the DIRCMD environment variable and can do it in
CB> lower case.
DIR /C or /R and XDIR provide these options but unfortunately not both
together. The DIR /C command "remembers" the format and /R displays and
remembers. XDIR gives lower case and a lot of other options. Pity they
didn't combine them.
CB> One thing that bothered me, is that DR-DOS 6.0 reports itself as DOS 3.3
CB> (I think.)
3.31. Specifically Compaq 3.31, the first to handle larger hard drives
without partitioning.
CB> The config.sys can do menus and can chain to other 'config.sys' programs
CB> of your choice. (MS-DOS can't do that!).
It can pass variables to AUTOEXEC.BAT or your nominated equivalent file
(just name it after the /P in the SHELL command).
CB> It has a fairly decent shell program, which I never used, so I don't
CB> know much about it.
The old GEM revisited.
CB> It had a bit of multi-tasking ability, although certainly not as
CB> extensive as DesqView or such.
Novell 7.0 does. I don't recall any multi-tasking in 6.0.
CB> Somewhere or other I've also got various tech notes and updates for it,
CB> too.
COMMAND.COM latest was 11/92, other files 7/92. Two update files needed,
both available from Novell's Web site the last I looked.
CB> I used to run GEOS Write 1.x with it. Don't have 2.x, so I can't say
CB> how well it works. I used to like the WYSIWYG, but I couldn't find
CB> fonts or clip art for it.
Works extremely well with Ensemble 2.01, but you may have problems with
some Windoze applications. BOOTANY may help here, allowing you to run
two different DOS versions on one hard drive.
